A Life Ring for the Boston Globe?

lifepreserverI’ve written about the Boston Globe saga several times even though it is a story about the decline of traditional media and not new media. Or is it REALLY about new media? New technology always changes the business model. The ones that survive are the ones that adapt or harnass the technology in their favor and that is what newspapers were slow to accomplish. In fact, all traditional media was slow to adapt – I know because I was there in TV Newsland when the Internet paradigm hit the traditional media, thinking they had the mass audience of readers, listeners and viewers all sown up.  A lot of folks put their collective heads in the sand thinking demand for information would remain static.  Sure – people would always walk to the end of the driveway to pick up the paper and read news that was more than 5 hours old instead of popping open the laptop for news that happened in the last hour…better yet…just check the iPhone, BlackBerry or mobile device of choice for the latest news that happened moments ago! With the Boston Globe on the brink of extinction, negotations have been underway for 3 months to keep the paper afloat and now an agreement has been reached to save $10M.  Will they get it? Will newspapers in general as well as the other traditional media understand what needs to be done to reach the audience? I don’t think it’s too late  to preserve journalism not necessarily in only print delivery, but it will take the minds of many to do it.  And if the protests in Iran teach us anything, it is the power of technology that can help us to get to the truth.
