Hope so. Often, there are very few examples, particularly in the corporate world, particularly now. But today I ran across two. Red Sox slugger, David Ortiz has started an initiative called Papi Cares 2009, where a different family will be selected to go to each of the 81 home games at Fenway Park. A few other sponsors kicked in and the family gets food vouchers, t-shirts and all the trimmings to have a great time! For those of you not in Boston, Big Papi is our nickname for Ortiz, who is from the Dominican Republic and he’s actually no stranger to doing the right thing here. “These are tough times and it is important that we all step up and find ways to help each other,” says Ortiz. Imagine that – coming from a star baseball player who makes the big bucks? (not hearing that come out of Yankee stadium – just had to throw that in on the eve of Opening Day here in Red Sox Nation.) And the other example I discovered today – an unlikely source, Liberty Mutual Insurance has a site called The Responsibility Project that acts like a social network for people to share ideas, experiences, stories, discussions, etc about ‘doing the right thing.’ There’s plenty of new media there too. It all started with a TV commercial in a goodwill campaign. Then the company got so many positive comments from the public, it took off, complete with a former journalist, Kathy McManus from ABC News, writing a blog on the site as well as other big name contributors. Isn’t it a breath of fresh air to hear some good news now and then?
